Create Space is Better for Short Books

March 13, 2008 by Jacqueline L. Jones

After much research, I’ve decided to move the sales of my book to Create Space after all. The unit price per book under the Pro Plan, which costs $50, is cheap enough for books under 48 pages, and the wholesale price is low enough to accommodate volume discounts to anyone who orders through me.

The unit cost for single and small bulk sales sales of a short book is too high through Lulu. The cost under the company’s agreement with Borders is the same. Longer books don’t present the same problem, especially with access to additional online markets outside Lulu and Borders. My book is only 32 pages and won’t get much longer with planned revisions.

I’ve also hesitated to make the change until now because I’ll have to reformat my cover and resize the entire book. Lulu’s publishing wizard is so easy, I was reluctant to try a new process. Then I discovered that the book Perfect Pages by Aaron Shepard, which I used to format the original book, contains a simple explanation of how to format the cover for publishers like Create Space.

I need a nap after all that thinking.
