Issues Matter

Pundits say issues don’t matter. I disagree.

For a person with a chronic illness who is unable to work, has little or no means of support, and has no access to health care, a change in policy can lead to homelessness or death. If you listen closely enough, you can discern if a politician cares for the weakest among us or is a leader of the privileged few.

Thoughtful change of position can be just as important as consistency. We know that politicians seldom keep their promises. Some say some things just to get elected. At times their legislative failures are due to poor communication and negotiation skills. After winning an election, they may realize that they misunderstood an important issue. If we listen carefully enough, we can discern between patronizing rhetoric and compassionate empathy.

Listen to the candidates while you still have a chance. Though the direction of your life is ultimately up to you, thoughtful or thoughtless legislation can make a difference, and that difference can change your life forever.
