Living in the Valley of the Shadow of Death

My alma matter looks like a war zone. A tornado literally skipped over my apartment complex last week, and it caused at least $40 million in damage to Union University.Houses on neighboring streets are missing roofs. Some are just missing. The initial damage estimate for the city is $87 million. All this and I lost nothing but electricity for nine hours.

Where was God in all this? He was protecting this community. It’s a miracle that only two people died on the other end of town. The tornadoes here in 2003 took 11 lives.

As I thanked God for his mercy, I thought about surviving with a chronic illness in midst of all this destruction. How do you replace ruined food for special diets when you barely had enough money to buy it the first time? Where would you store it if you had the money to replace it? How do you replace medication that may have blown to the next county?

I thank God for people who care about the living. People from all over the community and state have offered their services. Hordes of volunteers have streamed in from other states. They will tend to these needs, and we can rejoice that God is still showing His love through them.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for Thou art with me; Thy rod and Thy staff, they comfort me. Psalm 23:4
