Visitors Now Welcome

November 6, 2007

I’ve never enjoyed entertaining at home. When visitors come, I feel like an animal in the zoo facing observation for a scientific study. The inhabitants of this apartment go into extreme cleaning mode as the observation date approaches.

Entertaining visitors also can destroy a tight schedule. Try preparing special diets for yourself and a loved one around doctor’s appointments, a home business, and life in general without a synchronized routine. Major interruptions can mean chaos for several days.

Schedule interruptions aside, the visitors who came from San Antonio to see us last weekend may have changed my attitude forever. I had not seen my cousin in over 30 years, and I had never met her husband. They entered our apartment with warm smiles and even warmer embraces. But they really showed their character over the next two and a half days.

How often have you had a guest cook for you? They also helped my mom in and out of the apartment and the van as we traveled around to see local sites and visit relatives who were not related to them. Since they understood that people with chronic illnesses don’t get out much, they didn’t complain about the limited itinerary, and quickly bonded with relatives from the other side of the family who were able to fill in as tour guides. Then they expressed a desire to come back and share the normal stops in our lives again at some time in the future, as if those stops were the highlight of the trip.

As much as I fear cloning, I think I’ve found two perfect candidates and the perfect business. Just think of the possibilities on the Internet: “Order the perfect visitors today for just $99.95 each.”

I’m glad things went well with your visitors! I also tend to get stressed about having people over; I’m not great at entertaining.

Got something to say?
